ScorecardAn injury to Mahendra Singh Dhoni has given Dinesh Karthik the opportunity to shine as the wicketkeeper after almost 6 years in the ongoing third ODI against New Zealand on Monday.Dhoni has a sore hamstring which is why he was not included in the playing XI for the crucial game, one that could decide the fate of the series with India already leading 2-0. This is only the third occasion when the veteran stumper was forced out of the playing XI.India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI: Live Cricket ScoreThe last time he was out of the playing XI was way back in 2013 when he missed three ODIs due to a hamstring injury in a tri-series in the West Indies. While the first time, he missed out was 12 years ago when he was out of two ODIs against Ireland and South Africa in Belfast in 2007 due to viral fever.Dinesh Karthik, who did not feature in the first two ODIs, has donned the gloves for the first time since the Asia Cup in Bangladesh in 2014, the tournament which Dhoni had missed. He remained out of the team for three years before making a comeback in 2017 in the ODI series against West Indies. Since then Karthik has been in splendid form with the bat having scored 183 runs in 2017 at an average of 61, 167 runs last year at 41.75. He has played four matches this year and scored 37 runs till now.advertisementAlready 2-0 up in the five-match ODI rubber, India made two forced changes by leaving out an injured Dhoni and all-rounder Vijay Shankar with Hardik Pandya coming back into the side. This is Pandya’s first match after his ban was lifted by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) for his alleged “sexist comments” on Karan Johar’s TV show Koffee with Karan.Pandya returns to the playing XI for the first time since an injury he picked up in the Asia Cup in September last year. After gaining full fitness, Pandya joined the team during the Test series in Australia and was expected to play in the ODIs before the Koffee with Karan controversy erupted.Pandya’s presence lends solidity and balance to the side and skipper Virat Kohli has time and again admitted it. The Baroda all-rounder’s replacement Vijay Shankar is a decent cricketer but is yet to possess the X factor that Pandya has. That Shankar was given only two overs in the second ODI is an example that he is still not ready to shoulder extra responsibility. On the other hand, the hosts made a single change by including the left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner in place of Colin de Grandhomme. For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
