SOCU playing duplicitous game with Demerara River crossing probe – Jagdeo

first_img…says LGE important, referendum to express dissatisfactionOpposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday told a group of supporters on the West Bank of Demerara that the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) is playing a duplicitous game with investigations as it relates to the way in which the consultancy contract was awarded for the construction of the new Demerara River crossing.Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo speaking at one of the meetings on the West Bank of Demerara on Wednesday“SOCU is playing a duplicitous game with (Public Infrastructure Minister David) Patterson because they have not called him in as yet and we will push hard for the entire Cabinet to go in (to SOCU),” he told the gathering at Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara. The contract in question was awarded to Dutch company, LievenseCSO, for a feasibility study into the new Demerara River bridge crossing. The Opposition had requested that the Public Procurement Commission investigate the award of the $148 million sole sourced contract. In its report on the matter, the Commission flagged Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson for requesting from Cabinet that the contract be sole sourced, instead of being processed through the Procurement Board as the law says should be done. It was subsequently announced that SOCU would be investigating the contract award.Public Infrastructure Minister David PattersonFollowing that, the PPP forwarded the matter to SOCU for them to investigate. Thus far, Minister Patterson has provided statements to SOCU but has never been summoned to be questioned as is the case with several of the Opposition Members as the investigation into Pradoville continues.Jagdeo, on Wednesday, held a series of meetings with the residents along the West Bank of Demerara as he presented the Party’s candidates and their plans for the November 12 Local Government Elections. At the La Grange meeting, the PPP General Secretary spoke boisterously about their plans for the Local Authority Area with the main item on the agenda being the refusal of any increased taxes.“We have a message for everyone and it is all about progress and working for a better future for all our people and really meaning,” he said, while calling on the residents to aid in getting the Party’s plans out there. He said the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Administration is out of touch with the reality of what is happening in Guyana since they are all living the good life while the common man has to be continuously fighting for what they deserve. He spoke at length about increased taxes that burdens the common man and provides additional revenue for the Government to waste.Head of SOCU, Sydney James“Over $30 billion in increased taxes to the common man. People in the hinterland have to pay an increase $1.3 billion because they put the VAT on so many things. We (the PPP) had said that because life in the Hinterland is so hard that they can bring in items such as soft drinks and water and so on tax free but this Government taxes that now. They have to pay $5000 more per barrel for fuel, $300 for water and $500 for water,” Jagdeo said.At the Patentia Tarmac, the Opposition Leader told a crowd that despite being in office for three and a half years, the APNU/AFC Government remains wasteful. He identified that every sector of the economy is being rapidly declining, adding that the country is still mourning the death of the sugar industry.“We had said and I will say it again that when the PPP gets back in office we will provide a stipend to every laid off sugar worker, while we find jobs for them,” he said, to loud cheers from many of the former Wales Estate workers. He reiterated that not only the sugar workers are affected by the estates closure, rather it is the wider communities as well since businesses depended on their earnings as well. He said during his meeting is Canal, people complained of having to pull their children out of school because they can no longer afford to send them all because they had to quit care farming following the closure of the Wales Estate.“I never thought we would have gone back to the days of hunger but I’ve seen people gone back to hunger because I know as a boy how it was. I thought we have gone a long way in eliminating hunger. They killed the momentum in the economy growth,” he noted. The party leader called on his supporters to reject the APNU/AFC Government in their large numbers because that will send a message that they are exhausted with the constant promises and very little delivery.“We can only reduce the hardships if we participate in the Local Government Elections… this is an important referendum to send a signal to the Government that we are abhor to their national policies… we have to come out in our numbers… we have to crush them in a massive way so they can see the writing on the wall,” Jagdeo urged.Meanwhile, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) parliamentarian Irfaan Ali said they are embarking on a very important journey by contesting LGE as it is one step to ensuring that the PPP is returned to Government. He expounded on the importance of the elections by urging persons to come out in their numbers and vote for the cup. Also, most of the constituency candidates presented their plans for their respective constituencies which includes improved drainage and better infrastructure within their communities. The Local Government Elections is slated for November 12.last_img read more

Bone Structure Matches Animal Size

first_imgThe bigger the animal, the more weight it has to carry.  How can large animals maintain strong bones without making them heavier?  It turns out all animals have struts in their bones called trabeculae, but the larger the animal, the fewer, stronger, and farther apart are the struts.  This new finding is leading to ideas that may improve your car.    PhysOrg reported on a team from Imperial College London and the Royal Veterinary College that was curious about bone structure in various mammals.  Looking at femurs from 90 different species of mammals, reptiles and birds, they “found that trabeculae, typically found near joints, have different geometry depending on the size of the species.”  This was news to them.  Dr. Michael Doube at Imperial College London said,“Scientists had not previously known that the structure of trabeculae varied, or scaled up, depending on the size of the animal.  We assumed that trabeculae would be important in supporting the weight of larger creatures such as Asian elephants, which can weigh more than three tonnes.  However, we were surprised to find that animals that have comparatively lighter loads, such as the Etruscan shrew, weighing three grams, also has trabeculae supporting its tiny body.  Our study is helping us to see how the remarkable geometry of trabeculae supports loads in all creatures, no matter how big or small they are.”In addition, they found that the mass of bone per unit volume was roughly constant in big and small animals, but “the trabeculae in bigger animals were thicker, further apart and less numerous.”    Moving from observation to explanation, they reasoned that “the big trabecular struts inside the bones of larger animals help to support their heavier load without the need for thicker and denser bones.  Using this structure saves valuable energy in larger animals because they do not have to grow, maintain and carry extra bone tissue around with them.”  Neat idea.  From explanation they moved to application:The scientists say new structural materials could be developed, which are inspired by geometry inside femurs.  These materials would contain a lattice work of stiff foam that would be reinforced in certain areas, depending on the load being exerted on that particular section.  This type of material could be used in car bodywork, only being reinforced in areas of the car where loads are heaviest.  This could make cars lighter and more fuel efficient.A capital idea, worthy of stimulus by some entrepreneur.  The scientists delved deeper into their biomimetic hunch and generated 200 computer models of “virtual bones,” giving their open-source code, named BoneJ, to anyone who wants to download it (see BoneJ.org).  About 1500 downloads from 250 institutes and organizations have taken a look at it.  Some of them might have great ideas for lightweight aircraft and automobiles.  Think of the slogans: Tough as an elephant or Built to fly like a bird.    Now that they understand bone structure better, the team wants to study animal motion and joints “to understand the relationship between how animals walk and bone structure.”  What might come of that?  Understanding bone deformities, for one thing; reconstructing the movement patterns of extinct species, for another.  Their research was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.Bravo!  Great science with no evolution!  We wish to praise researchers who get the best aspects of science right: observation, explanation, and application to help improve our lives.  Sir Francis Bacon stressed that you will know good science (like good character) by its fruits.  Biomimetics again shows how a design-focused science not only leads to understanding, but to practical benefits.    We called this “design-focused science” but lest Eugenie and Rick Dawk have a fit, there was no need to mention God, Creator, or religion in this project.  There was, however, an unspoken assumption that animal bones are well designed for what they do (go back and read the quotes for clues).  Was that a science-stopper?  Clearly not.    It would have been so tempting for the reporter to toss in the Darwin fogma, claiming that animals evolved these amazing optimal solutions by blind chance.  But fogma not only blinds, it stinks.  Who needs useless smoke?  Who needs to hear tall tales, like notions that vastly different animals all converged on the same solution to optimize strength per unit mass?  Clear the air, stick to the observations, and make the theory do something helpful.  Observation – explanation – application: that is classical science.  It worked for Faraday, it’s fair for our-a-day. (Visited 37 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

What Advantages Does Your Startup Really Have?

first_imgWhen describing some of the common mistakes he’d seen in recent pitches for the incubator Capital Factory, Smart Bear Software founder Jason Cohen listed “invalid unfair advantages” as something that many startups needlessly tout. These include having a certain feature, having a team full of PhDs, being passionate and hard-working, and having strong SEO skills.Today, Cohen wrote a post describing “unfair advantages” that actually do make a difference. Unlike the “invalid” advantages, these “unfair” ones are not easily copied. While your competitor can add the same features as you or hire more PhDs and SEO gurus, the things that give you a substantive advantage are not as readily attainable. “The only real competitive advantage is that which cannot be copied and cannot be bought,” writes Cohen.Cohen lists the following as real advantages:1. Insider information: Although the phrase is linked to the illegalities of Wall Street insider trading, there are obviously many (legal) ways in which having deep and intimate knowledge of an industry, along with an understanding of what the “specific pain points” within that industry can boost your advantages.2. Single-minded, uncompromising obsession with One Thing: Cohen points to Apple’s obsession with design, Google’s obsession with search, 37signals’ obsession with simplicity as examples. “To remain un-copyable,” he contends, “your One Thing needs to be not just central to your existence, but also difficult to achieve. Google’s algorithm, combined with the hardware and software to implement a search of trillions of websites in 0.2 seconds, is hard to replicate; it took hundreds (thousands?) of really smart people at Microsoft and Yahoo years to catch up.”3. Personal authority: Akin perhaps to having insider information, personal authority is more than having expertise in a particular field. It’s about being recognized as a leader, and while it takes both time and effort to develop, the advantage is gives is almost unrivaled.4. The Dream Team: Having a Dream Team doesn’t guarantee success, but for a startup, having well-established, well-networked, reputable players on board can help mitigate some of the risks associated with startups. (The disadvantage to the Dream Team advantage, of course, is that members can always be hired away.)5. (The right) Celebrity endorsement: Cohen doesn’t mean here that it’s important to shell out big marketing bucks to have sports celebrities or rockstars endorse your product. Rather, he means having celebrities within the tech community – well-known investors or CEOs, for example – announce their support for or promote the use of your service.6. Existing customers: Cohen argues that every customer – even those who only took the trial offering, but abandoned your product – can offer insights and information that will be invaluable to you. Researching customers will help you continue to innovate and stay ahead of the competition.Don’t despair if you don’t have an unfair advantage, Cohen concludes, admitting it took him time to develop these advantages for his own company.
