He said: “To do this, O Cleirigh must have possessed great pride, not just in Ireland, but in Donegal and his native Creevy.”The Minister said O’ Cleirigh, a Franciscan brother, saw a need for Ireland, with its ancient high civilization and rich ancestry, to create an identity for itself in Europe and confirm itself early in the 17th century as an island of saints and scholars.Mr McHugh added: “I am happy to to note that Ireland has retained and built on this reputation over the following centuries and for a small nation on the edge of Europe, out influence on literature, art, music and culture on the international stage can be truly described as enormous.”Micheal O’ Cleirigh school chairman Brian McAuley welcomed the minister. He recalled that this weekend the school is reflecting on how Brother Micheal and the other Franciscans in Louvain promoted the lives of Irish saints to emphasise Irish identity. Brother Micheal was despatched from Louvain back to his home place to work on the annals in 1626.MINISTER McHUGH OPENS MICHAEL O’CLEIRIGH SUMMER SCHOOL AT ROSSNOWLAGH was last modified: May 16th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img
