If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

first_imgBy Garth Rose and Karyl WalkerSince elected Mayor of Miramar in 2015, Wayne Messam has led a commission that created a booming business environment and improved infrastructure. While he is not up for re-election until 2019, Messam is, surprisingly, not supporting two of his senior commissioners who are up for reelection in the March 14 Municipal Elections.Yvette Colbourne…boasts exemplary public service recordMessam, An American of Jamaican descent, insists that with a more dynamic commission, he can achieve bigger things in a city with a strong Caribbean populace. Next week, voters will decide whether to retain or replace three incumbents. Veteran Winston Barnes, a Jamaican-American, who has served the commission since 2003, is seeking re-election in Seat 3. Yvette Colbourne, a Panamanian-American of Jamaican descent, who has served since 2013, seeks reelection in Seat 2. Maxwell Chambers, also Jamaican-American, elected to the commission in 2014, seeks reelection in Seat 1.Miramar is the only city in Florida with an all-Caribbean-American commission. In addition to Barnes, Chambers and Colbourne, Darlene Riggs is Haitian-American. Two Jamaican-Americans, Attorney Norman Hemmings, and chiropractor Dr. Venessa Walker, are challenging for Seats 1 and 2, respectively. Barnes is being challenged by Haitian-American Dalton Jall’s Bonheur and African-American James R. Hepburn. Colbourne  who served as a member of a county executive team that successful manage a $600 million budget with up 2,000 employees in Miami-Dade County is surprised at Messam’s stance, considering the commission supports most of his proposals. According to Colbourne, she voted 99% of the time to support the mayor’s initiatives. She did vote against his pitch to increase property taxes in 2016.Winston Barnes,,,my record speaks for itselfThe 30-year veteran of public service who also has a masters degree in Public Administration, said any budget gap could have been realized by improving efficiencies in the city’s management.“We successfully met this gap, without raising taxes. At the end of 2016, there was a balance of $6 million in the city’s funds, carried forward to supplement 2017 expenditure,” said Colbourne. And while Messam himself has wide-scale backing, an unofficial CNW poll in the community suggests residents are happy with the current commission. The general consensus is that Miramar’s business climate is a sound source of jobs for residents and commends Messam and the commissioners for doing a splendid job.According to one individual, Miramar is an aviation hub which provides economic spin-offs to many businesses that supply services to that industry, There is also a growing complement of Fortune 500 companies. Significantly, Miramar has managed to stem the outsourcing of U.S jobs to countries like China. In his 2015 State of the City address, Messam said there were 1,800 residential units planned for the city, valued at $191 million. He noted that during the recession of 2009, Miramar continued to expand.  He also mentioned several infrastructural improvements in the eastern section, including new drainage. The Pembroke Road overpass is completed and has resulted in a significant ease on traffic congestion. He pointed to getting the commission to approve a $60 million revenue bond for funding park development, and the Miramar amphitheater (under construction) as other high points of his administration.Barnes, a broadcaster by profession, has been on the commission for almost 14 years. He listed his achievements which include: creating a scholarship fund from a raise he received in his commissioner’s salary; voting for funding both Miramar high schools annually; and providing funds to help residents with home repairs to meet city codes, and paying utility bills. He anticipates another term.“I should be re-elected to keep integrity, experience and decorum on the Commission. My record speaks for itself,” Barnes said.Chambers seeks re-election to enhance the financial health of the city without increasing taxes, and ensuring that property values in East Miramar are not compromised by developers who are bent on turning homes into rental property. If elected Dr. Walker’s mission is to make it possible for more residents to own businesses; enhance public safety, keep taxes low, push the city’s econ development and be a transparent representative.Hemmings, making his second bid for the seat, says his mission if elected is to hold down property taxes, and mobilize strong anti-crime strategies.last_img read more

Crushing loss for Windies against New Zealand in Test match

first_imgWest Indies vs New Zealand A spineless batting effort sent the West Indies crashing to an innings and 67-run defeat to New Zealand, as the Caribbean side tamely conceded the opening Test inside four days early Monday.Entering the penultimate day at the Basin Reserve brimming with confidence following an encouraging display on Sunday, West Indies’ enterprise deserted them as they collapsed from a promising 214 for two overnight to 319 all out in their second innings. They were 231 for no further loss inside the first half-hour but dramatically lost their last eight wickets for 88 runs, to be bowled out about 50 minutes after lunch.Opener and vice-captain Kraigg Brathwaite, unbeaten overnight on 79, top-scored with 91 while Shai Hope moved from 24 at the start to 37, but none of the Windies batsmen could muster the required commitment to stretch the contest into the fifth day.Matt Henry added another scalp to end with three for 57 but it was his fellow seamers Colin de Grandhomme (2-40), Trent Boult (2-87) and Neil Wagner (2-102) who scythed through the middle and lower order to set up the comprehensive win.The defeat was the seventh in 11 Tests on New Zealand soil for West Indies inside the last 17 years, and their third innings loss in four defeats straight defeats in Wellington, dating back to 1999.For New Zealand, the win gave them a precious 1-0 lead in the two-match series, ensuring they extended their record of not having lost a series to the Windies at home in 22 yearslast_img read more

Ryan Scarratt – Front Runner – Giving niche sports the airtime they deserve

first_img Submit David Clifton: Licensing Expert – Gambling faces a pivotal moment March 31, 2020 Share Aspire builds Q1 momentum through regulated market focus May 5, 2020 Share Maxima Compliance – ‘Mastering technical compliance to grow your global footprint’ June 9, 2020 Related Articles Following Front Runner’s sponsorship deal with the bookmaker Mr Green, we had a chat with Ryan Scarratt of niche sports channel Front Runner. The new free to view sports channel has taken an interesting approach to broadcasting in 2017 when the bulk of similar companies are reflecting the paid subscription model. From showing ice hockey to poker and MMA it’s focused on the ‘other sports’ that don’t get the level of mainstream coverage that the likes of football and tennis enjoy. SBC: With many replicating the Netflix model and approach, Front Runner has gone the opposite way by offering a free channel on traditional TV. Why?Ryan: When we launched Front Runner, we wanted to offer a platform for niche sports that were struggling to get their voices heard to the wider public. Mainstream sporting events get the coverage, but there are still many others – with a massive UK following – that were getting no television airtime. For example, the Elite Ice Hockey League, poker, MMA and specialist motorsports.TV still provides the simplest interface to get pictures in front of an audience, and it is understood whether you are aged seven or 77. Putting our service behind a paywall, for the majority of viewers, puts a barrier in the way when the fundamental principle of our channel is to be inclusive, of all sports and all fans.So we’re really pleased to say that Front Runner is a free channel for sport fans to enjoy – and our approach is working. From day one, we’ve reached 19 million homes across the UK, niche sports are getting the broadcast hours they rightly deserve and fans are really welcoming the free television coverage. We don’t think there is a better platform out there than what we have provided, and we are working hard to expand this further.SBC: Who’ve you looked to as inspiration for Front Runner’s sports content? Is it aimed at being a something of a crossover between Red Bull and Sky Sports?Ryan: Again, our inspiration for launching Front Runner has always been to give niche sports the television airtime and also the recognition they rightly deserve.A substantial element of the channel’s success so far has been down to each sport’s strong fan base who value watching the action for free. We certainly value their following because without the fans, we wouldn’t have the viewers, and they’ve all been massively supportive so far.The channel is still very young, we only started in October and so you will see it evolve, particularly as the new seasons start from March onwards. Red Bull are using their channel as a marketing tool, they are a phenomenon and their extreme sport content is fantastic. Sky has focussed primarily on the Premiership, while we are trying to create something broader than both of these. We think there is an opportunity to provide a marketing tool for underrepresented sports. That is our focus, we are trying to do the right thing by our content partners and their fans, so they succeed and so do we.SBC: You’ve embraced the betting world but with an arrangement with a partner outside of the ones normally chucked at us at halftime of matches…why did you go for the sponsorship by Mr Green?Ryan: We like partners who understand what we are trying to achieve and Mr Green recognised the opportunity to come on board early.  I personally think they are an ideal partner in terms of supporting us in what we want to achieve and also delivers us some interest from an audience that, as you say, sits outside of the norm. Mr Green is also able to reinforce themselves as a market leader by getting in front of 19 million homes each day, so I think this is working well for them too. With all this in mind, and our plans for the future, our hope is that Mr Green will become a long term partner for Front Runner.SBC: What are the regulations with certain partners such as bookmakers for broadcast TV channels?Ryan: You could expect this to be a lengthy answer! In reality we haven’t found this to be a big deal.  We have very reliable partners who understand the constraints we need to impose and they follow them. Along with Front Runner, its parent company Information TV has also launched six channels in 12 months, so we know the regulatory landscape well.SBC: There has been talk of live sporting content coming to Frontrunner.. Can you divulge any more information?Ryan: Front Runner started broadcasting live motorsport in January with the 24H SERIES powered by Hankook race from Dubai. Moving forwards, live sport is going to be an important aspect of the channel and we will be showing the first live broadcast from the Isle of Man when we air the British Darts League next month. We have a great history showing the live greyhound racing most evenings and we know that ‘Live’ is something our viewers want and we will try to accommodate. A lot of the seasons are going to kick off in the next month or so and we will be making more announcements about our summer schedule soon. We’ll certainly be keeping everyone updated through our website, and our social media channels. Ganapati Malta: Finding a niche by capturing the Japanese culture

first_img Ganapati Malta is an online games developer for the gambling industry, established in September 2016 with a mission to supply the European market with games that combine Japanese design and technology with unique entertainment elements. After making its ICE debut back in February, Ganapati has gone on to enjoy a breakthrough first full year of operations, by presenting at several key conferences, producing a series of high performing games and receiving nominations for a pair of industry awards. We caught up with the company’s two sales managers, Mark Mckeown and Zoe Bell, to discuss how Ganapati has been able stand out in such a mature industry, what it has gained from networking opportunities at global events, and some of the innovative ideas to expect from them in the new year.SBC: How do you reflect on the last year for Ganapati? In what areas have Ganapati products been able to stand out from the crowd?Mark Mckeown: It only takes you to be at an event like SiGMA in Malta to get feedback from operators and platform providers alike about how much they like the Authentic Japanese content we are developing. They believe we have found a unique niche that has yet to be exploited and so do we. We are very excited for 2018.Zoe Bell: We’ve definitely had an interesting 2017. We have presented in several key conferences, such as ICE, iGaming Super Show, Betting on Football, Betting on Sports and SiGMA. We’ve also sponsored quite a few industry events like the Global Gaming Awards during G2E in Las-Vegas and the C-level dinner during Betting on Sports in London. On top of that, Ganapati was also nominated for the ‘Software Rising Star’ category at the EGR B2B Awards and for the ‘Digital Gaming Innovation’ category at the Global Gaming Awards. We’ve also spent a lot of time on each and every game in order to bring them to the highest level of quality; we’ve also been working on improving internal processes efficiency, as well as expanding each and every branch we have globally by hiring experienced and enthusiastic staff to join our company. As per our content, it truly does stand out from the crowd and the key to that is being authentic Japanese and so unique. You can play themed content everywhere, but our content actually captures and resonates with the culture we represent. We’ve utilised a number of brands (like the famous Japanese games CryptTract, Dragon Hunter and Pikotaro’s Pineapple Pen) so far with more planned in the future. We don’t want to become a games’ factory, like many other suppliers. As said, we do appreciate quality over quantity and we invest a tremendous amount of time and resources on each and every game, from the math and logic to the sounds and graphics, through extremely thrilling bonus rounds. We are proud to offer a very exciting gaming experience and confidant enough to guarantee it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.SBC: What have you gained from the networking opportunities at global industry events in 2017?MM: It is incredible in this technological age, where everyone is online 24/7 the ongoing importance of a face-to-face meeting to gain insight and understanding which just can’t be gleaned via a telephone call or via an email. Personal relationships are still critical to forging business in 2017. The important task is to plan your diary carefully as there are so many global industry events in the calendar in 2018!ZB: We’ve gained so much from all the global industry events in 2017, I don’t even know where to begin! In addition to the conferences mentioned above, where we’ve had our own stand, we’ve also attended many other events, like G2E Las Vegas, EiG Berlin and the GamCrowd Tech Week in London. The added value is priceless. It’s a great chance to have so many key industry people gathered in one venue, not to mention the possibility to meet face to face with everyone we’ve been in touch with, all in one occasion. It also gives us a sneak peek on what our competitors have in their pipeline and what new technologies and new ideas are out there. But, of course, the most important benefit of attending and participating these events would be the extent exposure and the opportunity to demonstrate our product in the best way possible.SBC: Since obtaining a Class 4 Licence from the MGA in June, what are the key things you have learned from working with Maltese licensed operators?MM: The increasing role of regulation in delivering online gaming should not be underestimated. The important role that our Compliance department plays in ensuring we are up-to-date with regulation and compliance has made the process of working with our Malta licenced partners smooth and efficient.ZB: Maltese licensed operators are definitely straightforward, and I like it. The gaming industry community in Malta is very big, yet everybody knows each other which makes it easy to establish good connections. It’s been the second year we presented at SiGMA and again, it was very successful and productive.SBC: What technology and innovation do you expect to shake up online game design in 2018?MM: We are expanding our portfolio to include some very exciting new types of gaming. Make sure to stop by our stand at ICE next year to see what we are up to.ZB: I can guarantee that we definitely have some great and innovative ideas planned for the new year to come. We are exploring every new concept and technology that can be utilised in our new games as we’ve done so far. We aim to assure the players will be constantly surprised and excited and that Ganapati will continue being a supplier of a top quality authentic Japanese content.
