AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThisWith Governor Gretchen Whitmer beginning to ease restrictions of the Stay Home, Stay Safe executive order, businesses across Michigan are beginning to open up. That includes some right here in Alpena.Art in the Loft is planning to get back in the swing of things, bringing staff back to work at the art gallery after being off for 10 weeks.Executive Director of the gallery, Justin Christensen–Cooper, says the first order of business is making sure community members will have a safe experience when they return.“It’s going to take us a good week just to get the space ready, meaning having adequate signage that’s related to the coronavirus, sanitizing all the surfaces, cleaning, organizing, and then we’re going to use that time to get our artists back up there to start to setting up their displays of all their new artwork that they have.”One of the major concerns as the gallery prepares to reopen its doors is getting back on track financially. Like many other businesses, Art in the Loft has taken a significant hit due to the coronavirus response.“We’ve seen a 60% cut in what our revenue would’ve been up to this point. And that’s revenue that goes toward things such as administration and staffing, to paying the rent, to allowing artists the space to come up and use as a means to sell their artwork. So the biggest thing that I can really do to help not only our mission but to help arts in our community is to become a member of Art in the Loft. And they can do that through Art in the Loft’s website and those funds are going to be going to so many things that we want to start back up.”When the gallery does reopen, social distancing guidelines will still be in place and events will be limited to attendees who RSVP. A number of programs will also be available online. F. extends this support to your club and your family.”Barca have yet to officially validate the reports, but the Catalan club have closed Wednesday’s training session to the media. The Blaugrana top La Liga after taking 46 points from a possible 48 – the best start made by any Spanish side in Primera Division history.
Manchester City clinched an eventful win at Arsenal to keep up the pressure on leaders Manchester United. The Gunners had Laurent Koscielny sent off after 10 minutes for hauling down Edin Dzeko in the box, but Dzeko saw the resulting penalty saved.City poured forward and James Milner put them ahead with an angled finish.Dzeko made it 2-0 from close range but Arsenal dug in after half-time and Vincent Kompany’s late red card meant both sides finished with 10 men.Kompany will feel the decision, for what referee Mike Dean adjudged to be a reckless tackle on Jack Wilshere, was harsh but it gave the Gunners hope in the last 15 minutes.Even then, the home side struggled to create chances, and their first serious shot on target came in the 90th minute when Theo Walcott beat Joe Hart but saw Joleon Lescott clear off the line. City’s win did not end up being as resounding as it had threatened to be, but it was still a crucial result in the title race.Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool earlier on Sunday had increased their advantage at the top of the table to 10 points, piling the pressure on City to respond with a positive result. The defending champions’ appalling record at Arsenal – they had not beaten the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium or Highbury in the league for more than 37 years – did not offer Roberto Mancini’s men much encouragement of managing that before kick-off.But Koscielny’s 10th-minute sending off, after he had wrestled Dzeko to the ground inside the area by wrapping two arms around the Bosnian striker to prevent him running on to a Gareth Barry header, handed City the perfect platform to change that awful statistic, and keep their neighbours in sight. Dzeko made a hash of the resulting penalty, firing it straight at Wojciech Szczesny’s legs and seeing the Gunners keeper grab the ball after it rolled back towards him along the goalline. It did not take City long to make their extra man count, however. Arsenal switched off at a free-kick, which Barry took quickly, and Carlos Tevez slid Milner clear to beat Szczesny with a powerful angled finish.More chances followed, with Javi Garcia heading the best of them wide. Arsenal could do little but try to halt the relentless pressure, but they conceded a second goal after 32 minutes.Again, more could have been done more to prevent it. Milner fired in a dangerous cross after Pablo Zabaleta got the better of Kieran Gibbs down the right and, although Szczesny kept out Tevez’s initial effort, Dzeko was on hand to tap home the rebound.Only a Wilshere header off the line stopped Garcia heading home a third before half-time and, at the interval, City might have been thinking of how they could give their goal-difference a boost.Instead, Arsenal showed commendable spirit to stop the flood of City attacks, even if they rarely threatened at the other end. Szczesny did well to dive at the feet of Tevez when he ran clear but, aside from an Olivier Giroud header that flew over Hart’s bar, that was the most meaningful incident of any kind until Kompany saw red.City’s captain got the ball when he slid in on Wilshere and protested his innocence to referee Dean, but the official made it clear he felt it was a dangerous challenge. With parity restored in terms of men on the field, the home fans tried to roar their side forward. But the closest Arsenal came to a reply was when substitute Lescott denied Walcott, leaving Arsene Wenger’s men six points adrift of a top-four spot, albeit with a game in hand on fourth-placed Tottenham.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: ” “It was frustrating [to go down to 10 men] but we got away with it [with the penalty miss]. “We were down to 10 men with 80 minutes to go and knew it would be a difficult game. “We gave away two cheap goals, at 10 men you keep it 0-0 and you never know.“But we were too timid and did not have enough authority on the game. We let them dictate the game to us and when we went 1-0 down it was difficult.”Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini: “If you play with 10 players it is very difficult [like Arsenal had to do for most of the game].“But, we started with a good attitude and pressed high as we wanted to win the game, it was easier after the sending off. Second half we were too soft and I thought the game could re-open.“It was an important victory. We knew it was difficult to play here [at Emirates Stadium].”
Accra Hearts of Oak has named Coach Daniel Tettevi as the club’s replacement for Abubakar Damba, whose contract was terminated last Friday due to a lack of competence. Tettevi spent eight years at the club as a player in the 1980’s and was the regular goalkeeper when Hearts of Oak reached the semi-finals of the African Cup Winners Cup in 1982.The new trainer, who holds a Certificate in Basic Coaching, cut his coaching teeth at the Heart of Lions Junior side in 1999 before quickly moving on to Mampong-based Pras FC. He has also had stints with Network F.C, an academy side at Kaneshie, as well as Zaytuna FC. He is expected to start work on Tuesday, 15th January, 2013, as the team resumes training after a week break.“I am confident to work with my former club and am appealing to the supporters of the club to be patient for us the technical team to succeed,” he told JOY Sports. In a related development, the appointment of Team Manager Patrick Madjitey has been terminated. His functions have been transferred to Logistics Officer Nat Ofosu, with the position renamed “Welfare Officer”. These changes were not made lightly or spurred by any impropriety on the part of the affected officers. Rather, they are part of a carefully conceived restructuring exercise that is expected to bring a fresh burst of energy and synergy to the technical department.
Former chairman of the Ghana Football Association Lepowura MND Jawula has praised Kwasi Nyantakyi on his rise at the Confederation of African Football.Nyantakyi was confirmed as the head of CAF’s Fair Play and SocialResponsibility Committee and also appointed on four other standing committees of the African football governing body on Tuesday.According to Lepowura Jawula, who is also a member of the CAF interclub committee, Nyantakyi’s appointment epitomizes his good work but he has advised him to be tactful in his dealings.“He should do it with a lot of caution, diplomacy and understanding with all those on the committee,” he told Joy sports“It is good for Ghana football to have somebody at that level, so what this means is that our own football must be well organized now and we have to take advantage of the fact that we have somebody who is very close at the top level in CAF.“Fair play in our country must be up to scratch, so that people do not say in his own country things don’t get on well, it is a challenge for all to support him and to ensure he does the things that are right so one day when a much bigger opportunity there comes they will look at him.” Nyantakyi won a CAF Executive Committee election two years ago and also holds a position at FIFA.
Serena Williams said that she would be happy to take part in a battle-of-the-sexes showdown with Andy Murray after the Scot issued a playful challenge to the American by proposing a one-off match in Las Vegas.Responding to a suggestion made by a fan on Twitter, Murray said that he would seriously consider an exhibition match against the women’s world No 1.“I’d be up for it. Why not?” Murray said. “I’ve never hit with her, but she’s obviously an incredible player and I think people would be interested to see the men play against the women to see how the styles match up. It’s happened in the past with Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. How about Las Vegas as a venue?”Connors defeated Navratilova in Las Vegas in 1992 in a revival of a two-match challenge 19 years earlier when former men’s world No 1 Bobby Riggs, then aged 55, took on Margaret Court and Billie Jean King. He beat Court, but famously lost in straight sets to King in Houston in a match that grabbed the world’s attention.Williams has her own experience of playing against a male opponent – losing 6-1 to German journeyman Karsten Braasch in a one-set challenge when she was 16 at the Australian Open in 1988.Now 31 and arguably in the best form of her life, Williams believes she would be an entirely different proposition. “I was really young. I’m a lot more experienced now,” she said. Asked whether she was ready to take up Murray’s offer, Williams said: “That would be fun. I doubt I’d win a point, but that would be fun.”Judging by Williams’s progress this week, it could well take the men’s world No 2 to end her winning streak, which she extended to 33 successive matches with a 6-3 6-2 second-round victory against French teenager Caroline Garcia.“I wouldn’t want to play me at 21 or 31,” said the 31-year-old top seed, who is looking to draw level with Roger Federer’s haul of 17 grand slam titles. Her next opponent will be Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, at 42 the oldest player in this year’s Wimbledon draw.Williams insisted that she would not be underestimating the veteran Japanese player after watching her sister Venus struggle to beat her in a three-hour epic two years ago that was dubbed the ‘Zimmer Frame Thriller’ because both players boasted a combined age of 71
By mixing jaw-dropping goals with a growing list of brushes with controversy, Luis Suarez divides opinion like perhaps no other player in world football.Since 2010, Suarez’s crime sheet includes biting two opponents, racially abusing another and becoming vilified globally for a cynical handball on the goal line during a World Cup quarterfinal. There’s also his penchant for diving that infuriates fans and opposition managers alike. There are days, though, when fans are left shaking their heads not because of his misdemeanors but for his outrageous moments of brilliance on the field. On Thursday, the Uruguay striker was being compared with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and hailed as arguably the greatest striker in Liverpool’s history, after a scintillating four-goal display against Norwich in the Premier League.
