Angels give Andrelton Simmons a day off following 4-hit night

first_imgBALTIMORE — A night after Andrelton Simmons had four hits, he had the day off. While that may seem to be a bad time to give a player a day off, Manager Brad Ausmus looks at it another way.“After all the running, it turned out to be a good day,” Ausmus said Saturday.Ausmus had actually planned before Friday’s game to give Simmons the day off Saturday, and he told his shortstop about it. Simmons, who had started the previous 30 games, said he protested mildly.“I tried to stay in there, but I can only do so much,” Simmons said. “I don’t really need it. But it’s probably best, so I’ll take it now and make the most of it and try to be rested and ready for the next game. Or the seventh inning.”Simmons did come into the game for defense in the eighth inning, and he then collected another hit in the ninth, leading to an insurance run.Ausmus said he doesn’t want to rest his top players at home, because Angels fans want to see them, and he doesn’t want to rest them against divisional opponents, so that doesn’t leave many choices for days off.Without Simmons, though, the Angels were missing one of their most productive hitters. Coming into Saturday’s game, Fletcher was hitting .308 with a .357 on-base percentage and La Stella .255 and .352. Asked if Fletcher could move up, Ausmus said it was because La Stella is a lefty and they were facing a right-handed starter. “It’s not that I don’t like Fletch at the top of the lineup against a righty, I just like Tommy a little better, with a left-handed bat,” Ausmus said. “Fletch, hitting ninth, ends up hitting at the top of the lineup after the first time through.” …Pujols returned to the Angels’ lineup Saturday, after having Friday off, even though the Angels were facing a righty. Ausmus had said Pujols would play against lefties and some righties, while Justin Bour would face the righties. Ausmus said the only real guideline for splitting the playing time between the two is he wants to avoid having Pujols play first base three days in a row, to save wear on his legs.UP NEXTAngels (RHP Griffin Canning, 1-0, 4.66) vs. Orioles (LHP John Means, 4-3, 2.48), 10 a.m., Fox Sports West. He is now hitting .312 with a .775 OPS. Inside the numbers, there was also evidence that Simmons’ offseason plan to get stronger may be showing some results. Simmons’ average exit velocity is 90.0 mph, up from 87.8 last year. His hard-contact percentage was up to 44.9 percent, up from last year’s 36.3 percent. Both figures a year ago had been career bests already.Simmons said he’d like for the improved strength to show up in more homers – he has three – but he’s satisfied with where he is.“Sometimes you want to hit the ball in the air, but you can’t dictate exactly where you hit it all the time, just try to hit it hard,” he said. “I would love to have more homers. But I’m hitting the ball so I’m happy with that.”Simmons, 29, said the improved strength came from nutrition and workouts.“Trying to eat the right things, try to do the right exercise regimen for me, working with the strength coach in that department, talking to the dietician about stuff that I can put in my body that’s going to benefit me,” he said.HEANEY UPDATEAndrew Heaney is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with a three-inning, 45-pitch outing with one of the Angels affiliates Wednesday, Ausmus said. Ausmus was not sure about the level at which Heaney would pitch.Ausmus said Heaney would need at least two outings, including next week’s, before the Angels could have him join the rotation. That means the earliest date Heaney could be in the rotation would be May 25.Heaney, who has missed the first month and a half of the season because of elbow inflammation, had no issues after a 44-pitch outing at extended spring training Friday.ALSOThe Hall of Fame could accept the ball from Albert Pujols’ 2,000th RBI, even though the fan took it from the ballpark Thursday without it being authenticated. Jon Shestakofsky, the Hall’s vice president in charge of communications and education, said via email: “Not every artifact added to the Museum collection is authenticated. All artifacts are examined by the Museum’s expert staff for authenticity prior to being accessioned into the collection.” Ely Hydes initially said he wanted to keep the ball, but then changed his mind and said he wanted to give it to Pujols or the Hall. …The Angels traded Chris Stratton to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations. Stratton had been designated for assignment earlier in the week, after posting an 8.59 ERA in 29-1/3 innings this season…Related Articles Angels’ poor pitching spoils an Albert Pujols milestone last_img read more
