Man United transfers: Perfect wing backs to replace Rafael with

first_imgThe rebirth of Manchester United under Louis van Gaal continued at the weekend, as the Red Devils beat Italian giants AS Roma 3-2 in Denver. However, for Van Gaal and his troops it was another 90 minutes of learning, as they attempt to refine the 3-4-1-2 formation the Dutchman enjoyed such success with at the World Cup where he managed the Netherlands.Van Gaal conceded that he was not happy with the performance, admitting that there are still areas to improve in before the Premier League season kicks off in three weeks time.“I am pleased that we have won but it was not a good performance,” he said. One area that will need addressing is a wing back. Prior to Saturday evening’s match, first choice defender Rafael was ruled out with a groin problem that has seen the Brazilian leave the club’s pre-season tour to undergo treatment in Manchester. With wing backs seemingly an important part of the formation change, how will Van Gaal cope with such inevitabilities as this throughout the season?OPTIONSAntonio ValenciaFor Saturday’s clash with Roma, Van Gaal opted to field Antonio Valencia at right wing back, with Luke Shaw operating in the same role on the opposite flank.Valencia’s versatility means that he is capable of playing such a role, even if he has proven to be a little bit suspect defensively whenever handed a similar task in the past. His performance was typically resolute, and while he is certainly a good player to call on in such situations, it is hard to view the 28-year-old as a regular starter in this position.Ashley YoungPerhaps intriguingly, for the second half of the Red Devil’s 3-2 victory, Van Gaal decided to swap Valencia with Young – a player many see as playing for his Old Trafford future.Typically a more attacking player, Young’s selection at wing back ensured that United had more attacking width than with Valencia, but given the England man’s lack of real experience in this role, it seemed to be a case of Van Gaal trying to fit square pegs at round holes, rather than genuinely considering Young as an option.Michael KeaneWhile Keane is naturally a central defender, his versatility has seen him feature prominently as a full back during his loan spells with Leicester, Derby and Blackburn respectively. At 21 years old, he is arguably ready to be considered as a genuine option, and while Van Gaal utilised him in a central role against Roma, he certainly offers something in wider positions.POTENTIAL TARGETSDani AlvesBeyond Rafael, Van Gaal’s options at wing back appear to be rather mixed, so the Dutchman may decided that the best option is to delve into the transfer market before the end of the summer. One player worth considering is Barcelona stalwart Dani Alves. The Brazilian is rumoured to be on the way out of the Camp Nou this summer, and should he become available he wouldn’t be short of potential suitors. At 31 years old, he is no spring chicken, but his ability to perform at the highest level is there for all to see. While he may not necessarily have the legs to play every match, he would be a solid signing for Van Gaal and could act as the perfect mentor to Rafael.Santiago AriasA perhaps more left field option could be PSV Eindhoven’s Santiago Arias. While only 22 years old, he has cemented his place in the Dutch side’s first team and has earned international recognition – featuring for Colombia in the 2014 World Cup.United scouts reportedly watched him in action on occasions last season, with a figure of £7m touted as enough to secure his services. His comparable experience would allow him to be either a regular first team starter, while Van Gaal could also use him as a solid tailor-made alternative to Rafael.Man United fans, do you think Van Gaal should stick with his current options or should he sign a new wing back in place of Rafael? Furcal to have minor surgery on knee

first_imgLOS ANGELES – Shortstop Rafael Furcal, who signed a $39 million, three-year contract with the Dodgers last month, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said Monday the procedure on Furcal’s meniscus cartilage will be minor. Furcal is expected to recover fully in two to three weeks and should be ready when spring training opens, Colletti said. The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday in Los Angeles. Colletti said the Dodgers were aware of the problem when they signed Furcal on Dec. 7 at baseball’s winter meetings. But it gave us no concern,” Colletti said during a conference call. “We knew there was a possibility he would need a little cleanup on it at some point in time.” The Dodgers’ GM said Furcal probably could have made it through the upcoming season without having surgery, but the Dodgers decided it was better to have it done now. The switch-hitting Furcal, the 2000 NL Rookie of the Year, hit .284 for Atlanta last season with 12 homers, 58 RBIs, 100 runs and 46 steals in 56 attempts. His steals total was third-highest in the NL – and only 12 fewer than the Dodgers had as a team. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Furcal is a .284 career hitter with a .348 on-base percentage. He scored 130 runs in 2003, when he made the NL All-Star team. center_img 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
